Cranial Osteopathy for Infants, Children, and Adults.

“To find health should be the object of the doctor.  Anyone can find disease.”

-Andrew Taylor Still, MD, DO

Dr. Joseph Tieri is an osteopathic physician and specialist in cranial osteopathy. He has been in practice for over 26 years, and has treated thousands of children and adults.

Osteopathic medicine was discovered in the late 1800’s by a frontier physician and statesman, Dr. Andrew Taylor Still. Dr. Still did not claim to have invented this science because to him it was a truth “as old as the cranium (skull) itself.” One of these truths at the foundation of Osteopathy is the drive in the patient’s body to always get well. Toward that end, Dr. Still believed that the body contained within it all the necessary mechanisms for defense and repair in the event of a traumatic, toxic, or infectious insult. At times, however, these insults to the body can impair its ability to function properly, exerting an abnormal influence on the patient as a whole—their body, mind, and spirit.

Unlike most modern day doctors, osteopathic physicians like Dr. Tieri devote their practice to seeking health, and use their hands to restore the structural integrity of the body in order to manifest the inherent healing forces within the patient. As Dr. Still so succinctly said it 130 years ago; the role of the osteopath is to seek the cause, remove the obstruction, and let Nature’s remedy be the doctor.

The Cranial Osteopathic Treatment of Newborns and Children

Children are truly an expression of the divine and are uniquely in touch with the movement of creation. Unfortunately, they are also fragile and can deeply suffer the effects of trauma—from stressful pregnancies, difficult labors, falls, and emotional upsets. Left untreated, the tension that results from trauma can result in physical problems—feeding issues, ear infections, seizures, and headaches; learning difficulties—processing issues, attention deficits, and comprehension problems; and social and emotional issues—fears, anxiety, and impulsive behaviors, among others.

While the type of trauma that effects children is often too subtle to be seen on x-rays and MRIs, and too complex to ‘figure out’, the gentle yet powerful practice of cranial osteopathy is an ideal method of treatment. Osteopaths like Dr. Tieri have learned to use their hands to listen for these subtle patterns of trauma, and in the process, encourage the intelligent healing forces, already present within the blueprint of the child’s body, to do a more complete job of removing them.

The Osteopathic Treatment of Adults; The Road to Wellness

Dr. Tieri’s osteopathic approach to the treatment of adults is somewhat different from that of newborns and children (except in cases of adult Trauma, click here or in the header above). The aim of the treatment is to reduce the tension in the ligaments, tendons, and joints of the adult body that time and modern living impose, improving alignment in the process. The end result is not only diminished pain, freer movements, and increased energy, but also the benefits that come from the improved functioning of the nervous, immune, and endocrine systems that live within those soft-tissues and bones.

While osteopathic treatment is an integral component in the path to wellness, those that embrace a regular routine of targeted postural stretching and strengthening exercises that Dr. Tieri prescribes, as outlined in his books (listed below), regain their health more fully and quickly.

Typical conditions treated include headaches, TMJ, neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, hip pain, knee pain, and radiating pain in the arms and/or legs (sciatica). For some specific examples of the postural problems common to adults, please click the button below.
